Most of us spend the majority of our lives, running full speed, to full-fill the expectations of society – career, kids, relationships, parents….an endless list. I would like to know who came up with this life-style and why do we follow it?
Pretty much because that’s the way everyone does it. We get trapped in a degenerative loop of run, run, run. Ever watch Olympic running events and see what happens at the end? Yep. Everyone collapses. See where I am going with this? The habits, behaviors programmed by society, causing you to sleepwalk through life, one day same as the next, are not good for your well-being.
The good news is you have a choice. One of the first things to choose is to become aware. That’s it. Just start to notice what you do everyday and catch yourself when you have just driven 30 miles home and you have no idea how you got there. You don’t notice conditioned habits and behaviors that take up your day, unless you consciously choose to. Second, start being curious about what is around you, other people, the sky, nature. Be curious to how you feel. Check in with yourself. Be curious as to what makes you feel the need to check your cell phone for every 5 minutes. No judging, just be curious. Practice this for a few weeks and you will start to notice some things you have decided to do differently. Maybe even slow down a little, which happens when you take the time to “notice”.
When you have that down pat, when you wake up in the morning or right before you go to sleep, choose in your mind how you want your day to go. Picture it. Feel it. A leisurely breakfast, kids are all ready for school, your spouse made you breakfast (ok, that might be a stretch) you get to work on time and the boss tells you he is happy with your work. Try that for a couple of weeks, and see how more often than not, life goes a bit smoother. What we create in our mind and heart, we create in our world. See what happens.
More about this in the next newsletter where I get a bit “Quantumy” and a simple practice to help you deal with the stress monster. Take care.
